Coaching versus Consulting
Coaching and consulting are not synonyms. The focus of each role is different.
According to the Worldwide Association of Coaches (WABC): Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”
A coach focuses on the person being coached. It is about improving clarity and focus; it is about helping people change the way they think to create an implementable career mission and vision and a personal lifestyle. A professional coach can introduce you to the person you could become.
A consultant is someone who can help you with systems, processes and procedures. They are hired to fix "things." A consultant is hired to help you with your business operations. A consultant can work with you on many levels: perhaps you need a manager; someone who can keep you focused on your daily activities and routines; perhaps you need to improve your systems and processes; perhaps you need a mentor, someone who can show you the way; or maybe you just need someone to bounce around ideas that can help you improve your practice.
A good consultant can also be a resource; a person who can put you in front of the right people, the right information and the right systems at the right time.
The key point is to know whether coaching or consulting is needed. Most organizations can benefit from both. The primary question is: are your systems, processes and procedures the problem, or are you the problem?

6. Professional Accountability
A key ingredient for a successful coaching relationship is for the person to be accountable for the things that they say they will do. An effective coach will ensure there are no judgements, disappointments or guilt trips laid on the client in the event of non-action while at the same time ensuring the client understands their accountabilities and the results of their actions or inactions. The person must let the coach know what was accomplished from one coaching session to the next.
7. Eliminate the Energy Drains
Most people have items in your work and life that they wish were not there but that they tolerate because the items are not a big enough deal with or make issues with. Examples might be: a cluttered desk, poor time mgmt or people invading their space or time. Coaches use special resources early in the relationship to systematically eliminate things their clients tolerate that corrupt their environment.
8. Prevent Relapse
When people do not get the support they need to build their business, things get postponed and they might not ever get done. Coaching accountability is meant to prevent relapse when environments distract or influence less productive behaviour. A good coach will help clients stay or get back on track.
