The Hartman Value Profile
“Our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions.” – Stephen Covey
Have you ever wondered what is behind the decisions that you and other people make? Why do some people readily accept your recommendations and others do not? How do people decide which options are right for them?
It is estimated that we have about 50,000 to 65,000 thoughts per day and 90-95% of them are the same thoughts everyday. Can you really change anything, if you keep thinking the same way indefinitely? We all have heard the definition of insanity: If you keep doing the same things over and over, you will get the same results. Our behavior starts with our thinking; unless we change our thinking, we will not change our behavior.
Have you ever thought about thinking?
I would like to introduce you to the MindScan – Hartman Value Profile Assessment – a journey that will help you uncover what is behind your thinking and your decisions.
Just because we work hard does not mean we will succeed. The reality is, we can work hard, be disciplined and stay focused while looking for a sunrise in the west and it’s not going to happen. We must start with the core person and understand who we are and not try to be someone we are not, or someone whom we think we are or could become.
The late Dr. Robert S. Hartman (1910-1973) was the author of more than ten books, over 100 articles, and the translator of six books. His life-long quest was to answer the question, “What is good?” – and to answer the question in such a way that good could be organized to help preserve and enhance the value of human life. Dr. Hartman, whose work in the area of thinking earned him the coveted nomination for the Noble Peace Prize, developed a way to measure and track thinking. This incredible discovery allows us to very quickly understand who we really are at the core and, more importantly, measure our progress in becoming the best version of ourselves. In Dr. Hartman’s work in the science of Formal Axiology, he was able to boil down all thinking into three primary dimensions. Much like all color is derived from the three primary colors, all thinking is derived from three primary dimensions. Dr. Hartman called these three dimensions of thinking Intrinsic (how we relate with sel f and others), Extrinsic (what we do and the roles we play), and Systemic (the rules we apply towards the world and ourselves). He further divided these three thinking dimensions into two categories, the internal and external worlds. Externally, it’s how we think and view the world around us from these three dimensions. Internally, it’s how we think about and perceive ourselves from these three dimensions. Altogether, this gives us six thinking dimensions to measure.
With this basic understanding of what these dimensions represent, we can then measure our thinking capacity or clarity in each particular area and whether we’re attentive to or disregarding each thinking dimension. The first measurement represents our thinking strengths and weaknesses, while the second represents our thinking biases. By combining the dimensions, we can gain an even deeper understanding of a person. To help you understand, here’s some additional explanation of the terms:
In summary, no matter how great the business plans, strategies, tools, seminars, books and coaching, we will only reach our fullest impact potential when we start with who we are at the core. Start in the beginning… starts with thinking!
Here are three easy steps to write in your journal to discover who you are and who you are meant to be
Take the Scientific MindScan and review it with a highlighter and pen
The MindScan is a simple 20 minute exercise in which you rank two sets of 18 items. The results show how you think in two worlds (externally and internally) and in six dimensions (empathy, self-care, practical thinking, role awareness, structured thinking, and self-direction.) The MindScan will help you assess your clarity and biases in each of the six dimensions.

As you have experienced, motivational seminars and training sessions are wonderful, but after a few days, the enthusiasm wanes, the good intentions get crowded out by the urgencies of life and we find ourselves still wishing we could do it better! Professional coaching picks up where the seminars leave off. Founded on the principles of awareness, intentionality, accountability, synergy, commitment and momentum, coaching is about empowering individuals to achieve their greatest potential.
“Potential to Actuality” is about understanding the gap between what could be and what actually happens.
Are you reaching your potential? If not, then when and how?
Your outcomes are a result of your choices and your choices are the result of your thinking patterns. So, in order to change your outcomes and circumstances, you have to change your thinking.
Albert Einstein said it well, “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”
How much longer are you prepared to work in your business without really understanding the way you think and why you “DO” or “DON”T DO” the things needed to achieve your desired outcomes?
By understanding your thinking patterns you are empowered to manage your thoughts more intentionally and get better results much like how a pilot uses instrumentation to navigate a plane. The MindScan Assessment is a translation of the work completed by Dr. Robert Hartman’s powerful Nobel Peace Prize nominated work into a self-awareness gold mine that will give you an unfair advantage in life and your business or profession. When this proprietary tool is combined with Coaching, the results are extraordinary!
HOW TO TAKE THE MINDSCAN
The assessment will take about 20 minutes to complete and consists of two lists of 18 statements that you rank from best to worst. Be prepared, this tool will literally revolutionize the way you “think about thinking” as it relates to you, your business and the people with whom you interact. This is NOT a personality test! In short, you’ll walk away with:
